Why Is My Card Declined on claude.ai?

A card is declined at claude.ai almost always because your issuing bank refuses international online payments in USD, not because Anthropic rejected you. Other causes are an unsupported country on your account, a prepaid card range the processor does not accept, insufficient balance including the authorisation hold, and bank fraud rules triggered by a first foreign charge.
How do you tell which decline you are hitting?

Is it something Anthropic did?
Usually not. The most common decline never reaches Anthropic at all: your bank refuses the authorisation and the checkout reports the refusal. The exception is country availability — if Claude is not offered where your account is registered, that is Anthropic’s own restriction and no payment method works around it. Check that first, before you spend money on any alternative.
What actually fixes it?
- Ask your bank to enable international online payments. In several markets this is not possible at all — worth one phone call, no more.
- Use a virtual card from a fintech that accepts your local funding, if your country is on their list.
- Use a card belonging to a relative abroad. Cheapest route by a distance if it is available to you.
- Buy a prepaid payment code with crypto and enter it at Anthropic’s checkout. This is what we sell, and it is the most expensive of the four.
